What is Screwpile?
It is a series of races that begin with first start @ 1030 each day.  The courses are issued and after each race finishes the next race start is announced.  May have as many races during the day as time allows. Likely 2-3 each day for PHRF/Spin classes. Crew will be tired by the third race!  Cruising classes only sail a single race that starts at 1200 (that's us).

Where is it held?
Chesapeake Bay near Pax River.  Races are usually just a windward/leeward.

What is it like?
Winds range from typical Southern Maryland summer drifting to 20-30 kts steady.  Rain is possible. Since it's late September, it will be a bit cooler. This is NOT a social sail but will be challenging due to fatigue.

What class will the yawls be in?
We can either enter into:
  • PHRF Racing - Spin class with the big boys (professionals).  Multiple races each day.
  • Pursuit Class Racer Cruiser - Spin class in the cruising group.  Single race each day.
  • Pursuit Class Non-Spin - Non-Spin class in the cruising group.  Single race each day.

IOW, the Non-Spin Pursuit Class races.  Our skills are not yet ready for Spinnaker racing, and certainly not against professionals.

When are the races?
Sunday 27 September & Monday 28 September.  Start time will be 1200, races likely last until 1600.  Expect to meet at the boat NLT 0730, depart by 0830, motor most of the way to the bay for check-in by 1030, race at 1200, then motor/sail back for a 1900 dockside/secure the boat.

What is our go/no go criteria?
To race non-spin we need a minimum of 5 experienced racers, 8 total Skipper/crew maximum.  So if too little interest then no-go.

What will it cost?
$100 per boat to register.  This race is not covered by MWR, so we would also have to pay the hourly/daily rate rental fee for the boats (whichever is less).  Assuming a max crew of 6, the individual cost could be (100 + 225)/6 = $55 (or as much as $82 if only 4 crew).
