A yawl is a two masted sailboat with the mizzenmast (the smaller one) stepped abaft of the rudderpost. A ketch also has two masts, but has the mizzenmast attached forward of the rudderpost. A yawl's mizzen is also considerably smaller than that of a similar sized ketch.
